What do I believe to be the art of dance? Dance is an art form that yields a glimpse of the Creator's personality. His personality shines through an earthly, moving vessel in which he himself created in His image. And He being the originator of art assigns us the tools to co-create things on this earth that will redeem and breathe life and hope into a man while living in a cold world. God’s main desire is to draw man back to His love and rest, while He enjoys His creation by simply breathing life in it and living through it. If each of us would surrender our gifts to the Originator for the greater good to redeem a man, together we can form an aesthetic experience; a repentant and sincere art form beyond the realm of the senses that brings life to a man’s spirit so that he may reach his potential and live the abundant life.
What is a dancer? A dancer is a storyteller that carries the role of either a messenger or an intercessor. I admire choreography in which the movement is a reflection of the inner cry of a man’s soul that yearns. As storytellers and artists we hold the keys to open in discussed and the uncomfortable issues of life. As intercessors we represent the inner dialogue, internal struggle, silent crying, emotional and mental tension, the contemplation, temptations, mumbling, and groaning of man to God whom is all knowing and understanding. Also as intercessors, we portray the celebration of life, joy, fulfillment, love, hope, peace, contentment, harvest, redemption, integrity, revival, and justice of humanity, giving praise and thanks to God. We are the open vessels that sacrifice and stretch our bodies as a tool to present the unexpressed for individuals who are not able to explain or verbalize all that they feel, think, or want to reveal. We also challenge a man in his daily thought process and worldview.
As messengers, we express the Father's heart and His many facets towards mankind, with a love and hope that is so strong, deep, and wide. We express an invitation of rest, love, peace, joy, and hope that uproots individuals from self-destruction. There’s art that skims the surface in which it simply reiterate words and movement that have already been expressed. It begins to lose its relevance and becomes old food to the growing and hungry. But what about expressing how one truly feels...being true ambassadors? Try co-creating movement that emulate the contemplation of a crack addict that’s trying to fill a void, a single parent that’s living from pay check to pay check, a curious individual searching for truth, A single who is confused about their soul mate, a timid individual whose struggling with becoming one with their bold spirit man, an older man going through mid-life crisis, and so on…. What about parents who are contemplating leaving their families? Where is their voice? The expression of anger, love, frustration, laughter, confusion, and praise are cries to God on how we are feeling. A true story...a true testimony. God hear us… better yet, God save us. That is art.
With a God given gift, desire, skill, and tools, as artists we have the ability to co-create art that can either build into a man with a message of truth, love, and hope so that he may choose to live and grow, or stunt and destroy the potential of a man by tearing down his soul and spirit. I choose life. I choose to build…. And my tool is dance.
“With my voice I cry to the Lord, and He hears and answers me out of His holy hill. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!” – Psalm 3:4
